'The Record Buyer' review, 2001
Although his name is not as familiar as his wonderful guitar paying deserves Lancashire born Kevin Brown has been quietly releasing occasional albums over the last 18 years. Hi s debut, 'Picking Good Tunes.was released back in 1984, and garnered such good reviews that Joe Boyd licenced it to Hannibal, reissuing n as 'Road Dreams' in 1986. A second Hannibal album. 'Rust', was released in 1990, and both eamed nominations as best blues album of their respective years. This led to the big labels taking an interest, and Brown`s third album, 'Time Marches On' was made for Chrysalis in 1944, but was completed at the point where Chrysalis was being taken over by EMI who probably considered it a bit esoteric and a was then licensed to the discerning German label, Taxim Records. These were all albums of songs but his next release. 'Sunny Side Up' was purely instrumental, and was on his own Doodah label Now comes 'Mojavé Dust', which is well up to the standard of Brown's previous work. A measure of how well he can play is that no less an expert than Mark Knopfler told Guitar magazine: 'Kevin Brown is a fabulous slide player and offers a lot more than your normal steel guitar merchant'. This album includes mainly original songs by Brown, a song with a cover at Robert Johnson's 'Travelling Riverside Blues' which indicates one aspect of Brown's style Overall. this is the kind of album that will make many other guitarists consider slashing their wnsts. knowing that they could never be this good.
